★ Leah and Caleb Schroeder on Homeschooling – Full Interview

Leah and Caleb Schroeder – Full Interview, Part 1 (Transcription Copy)

Leah and Caleb Schroeder are homeschool parents who were homeschooled themselves. In this interview Leah and Caleb talks about the joys and challenges of homeschooling. We had the privilege of interviewing Leah and Caleb in California, on one of our first shoot days. While their homeschool educations were relatively unstructured, both Leah and Caleb went on to get college degrees (Caleb is working on his second master’s degree). Caleb is a public school teacher and adjunct college professor, Leah homeschools their six children and is a Classical Conversations tutor.

“God has uniquely gifted every single parent for the individual children they have. Even though they frustrate us and even though we feel like, “I have no idea what I’m doing”, God gave you your children and in His sovereignty he chose you as their parents, and he’s equipped you with what you need to impart to them the knowledge of Him, the understanding of his father heart for them, and that that responsibility trumps every other responsibility in our life.”

You will notice that the background in this interview is the same as in our interview with Andrew Pudewa. His interview was filmed in the same room two days after this interview.

Backstage Pass Members get access to full interviews from the cast of Schoolhouse Rocked and other great homeschooling resources. In addition to the wisdom shared in this conversation, this Backstage Pass Preview gives a behind the scenes look at the process of making a film like Schoolhouse Rocked. In filming for Schoolhouse Rocked we have shot over 100 hours of interview footage. In order to wade through all of that footage and assemble a film, we first upload a copy of the raw interview footage to YouTube to get an automatically generated transcript. This allows us to search for text in the transcript as we assemble the rough edit. This video is one of those raw interviews that we submit for transcribing.

For more encouragement, check out our interview with Caleb, where he talks about the role of dads in homeschooling. You will be blessed.

Check out a copy of the transcript from this video. Keep in mind, this text is automatically generated by YouTube, so there will be spelling and punctuation errors. It is usually close enough that we are able to search the text for keywords and find what we are looking for. The numbers are timecode. Normally, we will duplicate this document and strip out the timecode from the copy we read. However, when it comes time to assemble the edit the timecode is really important, as it lets us know exactly where we can find the section of video that we need.

my name is Caleb Schroeder and this is my

0:00:09.900,0:00:15.299
wife Leah trader we are the parents of

0:00:13.440,0:00:19.439
six children

0:00:15.299,0:00:24.119
I am a home school graduate I was

0:00:19.439,0:00:25.560
home-schooled K through 12 and and we’re

0:00:24.119,0:00:27.900
currently homeschooling all of our

0:00:25.560,0:00:31.349
children my wife was also a home school

0:00:27.900,0:00:33.750
graduate she was graduated first grade

0:00:31.349,0:00:37.260
through 12th grade she was home-schooled

0:00:33.750,0:00:39.960
we both we both went from home school

0:00:37.260,0:00:42.030
into into community college and then

0:00:39.960,0:00:44.730
went to four-year schools both have our

0:00:42.030,0:00:46.379
bachelor’s degree I have a master’s

0:00:44.730,0:00:50.550
degree I’m working on my second master’s

0:00:46.379,0:00:52.199
now I’m a high school teacher at a

0:00:50.550,0:00:57.180
cross-country coach and also an adjunct

0:00:52.199,0:00:59.010
college professor we we love education

0:00:57.180,0:01:01.649
we love teaching our children and we

0:00:59.010,0:01:03.930
love studying their minds and how they

0:01:01.649,0:01:06.780
work and how to get the information into

0:01:03.930,0:01:09.479
them and how to keep them motivated to

0:01:06.780,0:01:12.570
learn we have a we have a passion for

0:01:09.479,0:01:13.979
education that we get a pour into our

0:01:12.570,0:01:16.890
children oftentimes are sort of our

0:01:13.979,0:01:22.560
guinea pigs but we love it why did you

0:01:16.890,0:01:25.189
choose to home-school so our decision to

0:01:22.560,0:01:28.320
home-school was probably primarily

0:01:25.189,0:01:31.259
informed by our background we we’d been

0:01:28.320,0:01:33.420
homeschooled ourselves and we enjoyed it

0:01:31.259,0:01:37.020
we both had developed a love for

0:01:33.420,0:01:38.700
learning from homeschooling in all

0:01:37.020,0:01:42.780
honesty our initial decision to

0:01:38.700,0:01:44.100
home-school partly was wrong we chose it

0:01:42.780,0:01:45.630
for the wrong reason we chose it because

0:01:44.100,0:01:48.149
we were scared of the things in the

0:01:45.630,0:01:51.570
world and we wanted to keep those

0:01:48.149,0:01:53.820
influences away from our children and we

0:01:51.570,0:01:56.149
felt like if we homeschooled our kids

0:01:53.820,0:02:00.240
and we could raise perfect pure children

0:01:56.149,0:02:02.880
and after after six kids we realize it’s

0:02:00.240,0:02:05.700
it’s not the the world that makes our

0:02:02.880,0:02:07.350
children impure and that we need to

0:02:05.700,0:02:09.479
Shepherd their hearts and that we need

0:02:07.350,0:02:11.790
to focus on their hearts and we also

0:02:09.479,0:02:13.640
need to not not make decisions out of

0:02:11.790,0:02:15.380
fear we’ve

0:02:13.640,0:02:17.660
we’re still homeschooling even though

0:02:15.380,0:02:21.860
some of our initial decision was for the

0:02:17.660,0:02:25.400
wrong reason are are continuing to

0:02:21.860,0:02:28.370
home-school is because in large part I’m

0:02:25.400,0:02:32.120
a public school teacher and I see how

0:02:28.370,0:02:35.540
the the education system that is set up

0:02:32.120,0:02:37.220
in America really kills creativity kills

0:02:35.540,0:02:40.160
curiosity

0:02:37.220,0:02:43.850
it doesn’t promote learning at all it

0:02:40.160,0:02:47.150
teaches children to to hate to learn and

0:02:43.850,0:02:50.330
so we teach our children at home so we

0:02:47.150,0:02:53.060
can inspire in them a passion to learn

0:02:50.330,0:02:57.230
to pursue knowledge to get wisdom to get

0:02:53.060,0:03:00.970
understanding I would add to that to

0:02:57.230,0:03:05.150
that I just love to be with my kids

0:03:00.970,0:03:07.700
honestly I can’t imagine sending all six

0:03:05.150,0:03:10.700
of them or five of them right now away

0:03:07.700,0:03:13.220
every day and actually create a whole

0:03:10.700,0:03:15.200
lot of work to get them all out the door

0:03:13.220,0:03:18.709
every morning I don’t know that I could

0:03:15.200,0:03:20.959
really imagine the the tasks that that

0:03:18.709,0:03:24.260
would be I would much rather make lunch

0:03:20.959,0:03:27.280
there and you know just feed them at

0:03:24.260,0:03:33.799
home and do our things at home together

0:03:27.280,0:03:36.160
we like life is learning and we’re

0:03:33.799,0:03:38.450
intentional about our learning but also

0:03:36.160,0:03:40.220
home schooling affords us the

0:03:38.450,0:03:44.480
opportunities to learn together as a

0:03:40.220,0:03:46.900
family and not to be so segmented in

0:03:44.480,0:03:49.730
different age groups that we can’t

0:03:46.900,0:03:51.709
interact the rest of the time so that’s

0:03:49.730,0:03:55.700
another part of the reason why we

0:03:51.709,0:03:57.500
homeschool Caleb you mentioned the

0:03:55.700,0:04:00.680
importance of teaching your kids to

0:03:57.500,0:04:04.850
learn and teaching them to love learning

0:04:00.680,0:04:08.080
how do you do that you know the the most

0:04:04.850,0:04:11.570
important thing is your own passion and

0:04:08.080,0:04:13.760
and I as I interact with homeschool

0:04:11.570,0:04:17.630
parents one of the things I encourage

0:04:13.760,0:04:19.220
them to do is to not get so focused on

0:04:17.630,0:04:21.470
getting this information into your

0:04:19.220,0:04:24.870
children’s head that you forget to enjoy

0:04:21.470,0:04:27.210
yourself that you forget to read

0:04:24.870,0:04:29.610
books that you forget to do research

0:04:27.210,0:04:33.150
that you forget to spend time doing that

0:04:29.610,0:04:35.040
yourself when you’re when your kids see

0:04:33.150,0:04:37.080
you passionate about what you’re

0:04:35.040,0:04:39.570
teaching them or they see you studying

0:04:37.080,0:04:41.010
on your own or they even hear you

0:04:39.570,0:04:44.570
teaching other people about the things

0:04:41.010,0:04:47.669
that you’re learning it inspires them

0:04:44.570,0:04:49.590
it’s a it’s an age-old adage that it’s

0:04:47.669,0:04:54.000
more caught than taught every everything

0:04:49.590,0:04:57.120
is like that and so for me I learned

0:04:54.000,0:05:00.060
much more from my dad’s passion than I

0:04:57.120,0:05:02.220
did from his teaching my dad is a public

0:05:00.060,0:05:05.760
school teacher and he homeschooled me

0:05:02.220,0:05:07.620
and all eight of my siblings and and it

0:05:05.760,0:05:10.410
was his passion for learning it was his

0:05:07.620,0:05:13.860
passion just for understanding the world

0:05:10.410,0:05:15.960
around him that inspired me to learn

0:05:13.860,0:05:18.690
he’s a he’s a scientist he teaches

0:05:15.960,0:05:20.789
science and everywhere we went was a

0:05:18.690,0:05:24.240
science lesson dinner was a science

0:05:20.789,0:05:26.669
lesson everything was a dissection he

0:05:24.240,0:05:28.800
would explain to us as he as we ate fish

0:05:26.669,0:05:31.289
what each part of that fish was for and

0:05:28.800,0:05:33.360
how it worked and why God made it that

0:05:31.289,0:05:35.039
way and for him that was just that was

0:05:33.360,0:05:38.370
an expression of worship seeing the

0:05:35.039,0:05:41.520
world around him and so I think the most

0:05:38.370,0:05:42.930
important thing for inspiring a love of

0:05:41.520,0:05:45.240
learning and your children is your own

0:05:42.930,0:05:47.669
passion you have to be passionate about

0:05:45.240,0:05:50.250
learning I’ve I love studying read I

0:05:47.669,0:05:52.050
love studying how to teach because I’m

0:05:50.250,0:05:54.479
an educator and because I’m teaching my

0:05:52.050,0:05:56.550
children I love studying child

0:05:54.479,0:05:59.340
development and I spent a lot of time

0:05:56.550,0:06:00.990
just reading articles conducting some of

0:05:59.340,0:06:03.389
my own research and figuring out how

0:06:00.990,0:06:08.789
does this work what’s the best way to do

0:06:03.389,0:06:10.620
it I’m a math teacher and so I I love to

0:06:08.789,0:06:12.120
calculate things I love to look at the

0:06:10.620,0:06:13.710
numbers and I love to figure out okay

0:06:12.120,0:06:17.310
what what is gonna get the biggest

0:06:13.710,0:06:18.500
return what’s what method and just my

0:06:17.310,0:06:21.389
excitement about that

0:06:18.500,0:06:24.389
spills over to my kids they they love

0:06:21.389,0:06:26.190
math too and they love to interact about

0:06:24.389,0:06:29.789
topics we love this sit around and just

0:06:26.190,0:06:31.199
talk about things and that’s where real

0:06:29.789,0:06:33.479
learning happens

0:06:31.199,0:06:35.340
and as a public school educator I’m

0:06:33.479,0:06:37.699
constantly trying to create teachable

0:06:35.340,0:06:40.770
moments and they’re few and far between

0:06:37.699,0:06:43.080
whereas a homeschooled ad I have those

0:06:40.770,0:06:46.699
all the time every day because our

0:06:43.080,0:06:49.020
classroom is our life and so that

0:06:46.699,0:06:51.539
carrying that passion with you whatever

0:06:49.020,0:06:53.159
you’re doing wherever you are it just

0:06:51.539,0:06:55.590
spills over into your kids it doesn’t

0:06:53.159,0:06:57.449
even need to be very intentional you

0:06:55.590,0:07:00.330
teach so much more with your passion

0:06:57.449,0:07:05.159
than you do with your plans so one way

0:07:00.330,0:07:06.990
that I think that we really work to to

0:07:05.159,0:07:10.710
show our love of learning comes from

0:07:06.990,0:07:14.279
both Caleb and I had a really deep love

0:07:10.710,0:07:15.689
for reading just just grew up with that

0:07:14.279,0:07:18.719
both of us did and because we were

0:07:15.689,0:07:21.270
homeschooled we had time to read what we

0:07:18.719,0:07:23.189
enjoyed and not just what was assigned

0:07:21.270,0:07:25.830
to us or what we are forced to read and

0:07:23.189,0:07:31.680
so so that really encouraged both of us

0:07:25.830,0:07:34.830
to really love learning and so reading

0:07:31.680,0:07:37.229
is a huge emphasis in our home we really

0:07:34.830,0:07:40.589
enjoy you know Caleb was talking about

0:07:37.229,0:07:45.449
the math side but we also have a really

0:07:40.589,0:07:47.639
strong like just read aloud emphasis in

0:07:45.449,0:07:50.550
our home so that’s something that we do

0:07:47.639,0:07:54.180
a lot and that we love like every single

0:07:50.550,0:07:56.250
member of our family loves reading aloud

0:07:54.180,0:08:00.240
and not just reading aloud like our

0:07:56.250,0:08:02.909
oldest it is almost always you know

0:08:00.240,0:08:05.699
holed up somewhere reading and so it’s

0:08:02.909,0:08:08.430
and it’s trickling down to the younger

0:08:05.699,0:08:11.580
kids they’re just all readers and so

0:08:08.430,0:08:14.189
that’s something that I think we’ve we

0:08:11.580,0:08:21.360
love and so it’s been easy to pass that

0:08:14.189,0:08:23.069
on to our kids too so what do you think

0:08:21.360,0:08:26.539
will stay anyway for a minute what is

0:08:23.069,0:08:26.539
the best part I was going

0:08:29.619,0:08:36.219
so the best part I think about

0:08:32.599,0:08:38.539
homeschooling I’m sorry I’m lucky now

0:08:36.219,0:08:43.879
okay so the best part about

0:08:38.539,0:08:47.990
homeschooling for me is I would say it’s

0:08:43.879,0:08:53.649
a flexibility but not so that we can

0:08:47.990,0:08:57.800
just not homeschool but so that we can

0:08:53.649,0:09:01.399
use our homeschool for where each of our

0:08:57.800,0:09:04.550
kids is at where we’re at as a family so

0:09:01.399,0:09:08.389
that we can so that we can really make

0:09:04.550,0:09:10.610
it tailor fit to what we need and that

0:09:08.389,0:09:13.250
might be different on a day to day basis

0:09:10.610,0:09:21.050
on a year-by-year basis I think that’s

0:09:13.250,0:09:22.430
the best thing about homeschooling the

0:09:21.050,0:09:26.889
best thing

0:09:22.430,0:09:26.889
choosing the superlative is tricky um

0:09:27.759,0:09:34.699
maybe the best thing is that it forces

0:09:31.519,0:09:38.660
you to recognize your role as a primary

0:09:34.699,0:09:41.480
decipher of your children I’ve worked in

0:09:38.660,0:09:44.540
junior high ministry for 12 years and

0:09:41.480,0:09:46.699
one of the tricky things for me was

0:09:44.540,0:09:48.620
communicating to parents that I’m here

0:09:46.699,0:09:50.959
to support you and I’m here to help you

0:09:48.620,0:09:53.149
but you’re the decipher you are the

0:09:50.959,0:09:54.529
god-given decipher for this child and a

0:09:53.149,0:09:55.639
lot of times I talk to parents and

0:09:54.529,0:09:58.459
they’ll be like hopefully you can do

0:09:55.639,0:10:00.709
something with him cuz I can’t and and

0:09:58.459,0:10:02.420
God has uniquely gifted every single

0:10:00.709,0:10:04.790
parent for the individual children they

0:10:02.420,0:10:06.350
have even though they frustrate us and

0:10:04.790,0:10:08.620
even though we feel like they’re I have

0:10:06.350,0:10:12.050
no idea what I’m doing

0:10:08.620,0:10:14.360
God gave you your children and in His

0:10:12.050,0:10:16.790
sovereignty he chose you as their

0:10:14.360,0:10:20.420
parents and he’s equipped you with what

0:10:16.790,0:10:22.759
you need to impart to them the knowledge

0:10:20.420,0:10:27.129
of him the understanding of his father

0:10:22.759,0:10:29.420
heart for them and and that that

0:10:27.129,0:10:32.180
responsibility trumps every other

0:10:29.420,0:10:34.670
responsibility in our life and when you

0:10:32.180,0:10:36.199
homeschool it’s really obvious that I’m

0:10:34.670,0:10:38.389
the one who’s on the front line right

0:10:36.199,0:10:39.550
here I can’t Slough this off on another

0:10:38.389,0:10:43.089
teacher I can’t stop

0:10:39.550,0:10:45.430
Soph on a coach I am the one whose

0:10:43.089,0:10:47.830
disciple in my children this is my

0:10:45.430,0:10:49.660
responsibility and I think a lot of

0:10:47.830,0:10:51.750
times home school parents make that

0:10:49.660,0:10:54.430
decision because they recognize that

0:10:51.750,0:10:56.589
responsibility it’s been important for

0:10:54.430,0:10:59.620
me to realize that you can make other

0:10:56.589,0:11:01.510
education decisions and still do that as

0:10:59.620,0:11:04.170
a public school teacher I don’t see it

0:11:01.510,0:11:06.730
happen often for parents who are not

0:11:04.170,0:11:08.740
homeschooling their their kids there are

0:11:06.730,0:11:11.709
some who are intentional and who are

0:11:08.740,0:11:14.170
deciding their kids and I I it can’t

0:11:11.709,0:11:17.230
happen but for me choosing the home

0:11:14.170,0:11:18.970
school really puts me on the front line

0:11:17.230,0:11:21.670
and gives me so many opportunities to

0:11:18.970,0:11:23.589
speak into my children’s hearts whereas

0:11:21.670,0:11:26.200
if they’re going every other direction

0:11:23.589,0:11:28.680
we want to have that time and we want to

0:11:26.200,0:11:32.019
have that intentionality in our lives I

0:11:28.680,0:11:35.230
heard a veteran home school mom recently

0:11:32.019,0:11:38.980
say my best advice is to put your kids

0:11:35.230,0:11:41.709
into some other school for one year so

0:11:38.980,0:11:45.220
that any mistakes that any any faults

0:11:41.709,0:11:48.520
that they have you can blame here so I

0:11:45.220,0:11:49.800
thought that was really clever but she

0:11:48.520,0:11:59.829
was saying it tongue-in-cheek

0:11:49.800,0:12:03.339
what do you think okay all right so the

0:11:59.829,0:12:05.680
biggest struggle of home schooling is a

0:12:03.339,0:12:08.860
feeling of inadequacy and I think that’s

0:12:05.680,0:12:12.520
so true for me and for every home school

0:12:08.860,0:12:14.440
mom I know we never feel like we’re

0:12:12.520,0:12:17.890
enough and I think that’s actually not

0:12:14.440,0:12:21.040
just a homeschool mom thing but a woman

0:12:17.890,0:12:24.459
thing but somehow it comes out a lot

0:12:21.040,0:12:27.270
more in homeschooling but the the thing

0:12:24.459,0:12:31.540
that I have come to realize recently is

0:12:27.270,0:12:39.100
it’s true I’m not enough but Jesus is

0:12:31.540,0:12:40.899
and the sooner that I learned that the

0:12:39.100,0:12:44.470
more opportunity that I’m going to have

0:12:40.899,0:12:48.660
to impact my kids for eternity instead

0:12:44.470,0:12:48.660
of just teaching them to spell

0:12:50.890,0:12:58.090
I think that for a for a home school dad

0:12:55.960,0:13:02.650
the biggest struggle with homeschooling

0:12:58.090,0:13:07.510
is when you choose that path you’re

0:13:02.650,0:13:10.060
choosing a lot of chaos I’m a math

0:13:07.510,0:13:12.430
teacher I love order I like things in

0:13:10.060,0:13:15.730
their place and when you have a

0:13:12.430,0:13:20.950
homeschool lifestyle you have to let go

0:13:15.730,0:13:24.820
of that selfish desire and and and it’s

0:13:20.950,0:13:30.700
hard to to sort of live in the in the

0:13:24.820,0:13:35.140
midst of of chaos and for me embracing

0:13:30.700,0:13:37.090
the mess as part of embracing a passion

0:13:35.140,0:13:40.480
for my children they’re not going to be

0:13:37.090,0:13:43.360
passionate about learning if everything

0:13:40.480,0:13:44.650
is is regimented and in its place and it

0:13:43.360,0:13:46.330
is interesting because I was

0:13:44.650,0:13:47.740
home-schooled and I understood that and

0:13:46.330,0:13:49.270
appreciate it but now I’m in the pull of

0:13:47.740,0:13:50.890
school or everything is very orderly in

0:13:49.270,0:13:53.020
those bells and everybody sits in their

0:13:50.890,0:13:55.570
desk and and it’s wonderful and nobody

0:13:53.020,0:13:57.940
learns anything and so it gives me a

0:13:55.570,0:14:00.990
value for that but it’s still hard it’s

0:13:57.940,0:14:00.990
still a struggle

0:14:01.800,0:14:03.860
