★ Behind-the-Scenes – Scholé

A behind the scenes look at the making of Scholé, a short documentary that examines the practice and philosophy of teaching your children from a state of rest. It is our submission to the My RØDE Reel 2018 Short Film Competition.

Author Sarah Mackenzie wrote the hugely influential book, Teaching from Rest. The philosophies in the book were based on the ideas of classical education experts Andrew Kern and Dr. Christopher Perrin. In her book Sarah was able to refine these ideas into practical everyday ideas that have revolutionized homeschooling for scores of thankful readers.

Andrew Kern on Classical Education

Andrew Kern is the founder of the CiRCE Institute. We met with Mr. Kern in Greenville, South Carolina, during last year’s Southeastern Great Homeschool Convention. His insights into classical education, education philosophy, rest, wisdom and virtue, and Christian intellect were incredibly valuable, and did much to influence our own homeschooling practices.

Wisdom and virtue, truth, goodness, and beauty, knowing God and making him known – these continue to be hailed as the “important things”. Mr. Kern sums these ideas up perfectly in a single Biblical quote, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Hopefully, this is an encouragement to you, as you struggle to prioritize and schedule, plan and execute – to maintain balance.

Schoolhouse Rocked Official Trailer, “REST”

There’s a new OFFICIAL TRAILER for Schoolhouse Rocked!

Schoolhouse Rocked: The Homeschool Revolution is coming to theaters in early 2019. In this new official trailer Sarah Mackenzie, author of Teaching From Rest and Andrew Kern of the CiRCE Institute give a bit of advice for teaching from a state of rest.

“Jesus didn’t expect the disciples to feed the 5,000. He said, ‘bring me what you have.’ And they brought him this basket of loaves and fish and he turned it into enough for the multitude. Rest, for me, looks like me bringing my basket, just a little bit that I have, and letting him turn it into something more beautiful than I could on my own.” – Sarah Mackenzie

“What I want to say that about rest is that that’s what the Lord has called us to and if you believe that you should be homeschooling your children then you need to ask yourself a basic question. Do you believe that because you’re afraid of something, or do you believe that because you’re called to it? Our Lord has said to us very clearly, ‘if you’re weary and you’re heavy laden come unto me and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you.’ And then he says, ‘my yoke is easy and my burden is light.'” – Andrew Kern

Andrew Kern – The Way, the Truth, The Life

Andrew Kern – The Way, the Truth, The Life

“Christ is the note in which – he’s the key in which the whole cosmos sings. The angels sing in the key of Christ, and we should too. And when we aren’t willing to think, for whatever reason, when we aren’t willing to think according to our capacity, which for none of us is very great, but if we’re not willing to think according to our capacity then we have to consider the possibility that it’s because we don’t believe that Jesus is the truth, which he claimed to be – “The Way, The Truth, and The Life.”

Andrew Kern – “3 Basic Skills”

Andrew Kern – “3 Basic Skills”

Andrew Kern, of the CiRCE Institute, talks about the three basic skills we should be teaching our children, which are paying attention, memory, and imitation. In all things, these skills should be taught with an emphasis on the true, the good, and the beautiful.

Andrew Kern “Taste and See”

“So we need to orient our instruction toward harmony, because Christ is the principal of all harmony, and if we do that then imitating and memorizing and paying attention will be energized. They will not just be a hook through the nose forcing kids to do things for tests, but they will be energized and directed toward something truly satisfying to the soul, and it’s satisfying because God made it that way. God made the soul to hunger for harmony and he made made himself as the solution. So every single time the soul harmonizes anything they experience the delight, ultimately the delight of knowing God, of enjoying God’s goodness. Now, obviously that’s the same thing as the glory of heaven, but it’s a taste. So let them taste it. “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” – Andrew Kern, CiRCE Institute
