Homeschool Curriculum Picks: Encouragement, Favorites, and Lessons Learned
“What Curriculum Do You Use For…?”
We hear this question all the time—and honestly, it’s one of our favorite conversations to have.
Over many seasons of homeschooling, the Schoolhouse Rocked team has had the privilege of using a wide variety of curricula, books, programs, videos, co-ops, and teaching methods in our own homes. From traditional textbooks to Charlotte Mason, classical education to unit studies—and just about everything in between—we’ve experienced firsthand that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to homeschooling.
That’s one of the beautiful things about home education: families have the freedom to build an education that fits their unique children, values, and goals.
Our annual Homeschool Curriculum Special and Homeschool Curriculum Guide were created to help make that process a little less overwhelming and a lot more encouraging.
We’ve organized our curriculum picks by subject to make them easy to browse. You’re welcome to jump straight to the recommendations and links, but we hope you’ll also take a few minutes to read through the principles and encouragement woven throughout this guide. More important than finding the “perfect” curriculum is understanding how to thoughtfully choose resources that support your family’s mission and goals.
Preparing for a new homeschool year always brings a sense of excitement and fresh anticipation. There’s something special about opening new books, planning new rhythms, and imagining all the ways God will work in our children’s hearts and minds in the coming year. It feels a little like Christmas in the middle of summer! We count it a privilege to share the resources and ideas that have served our families well.
Before diving into curriculum choices, here are a few reminders we hope will encourage you.

Start with Prayer and Purpose
Before filling your shopping cart or comparing curriculum reviews, spend time in prayer. Ask God to direct your decisions and give you wisdom for the year ahead.
One of the most helpful things you can do is create a homeschool mission statement—a simple reminder of your family’s priorities and calling. When you feel pressure to follow trends or compare yourself to other homeschool families, that mission statement can help refocus your heart on what matters most.
Know Your Kids—and Yourself
Understanding how your children learn—and how you naturally teach—is incredibly valuable.
Some children thrive with structure and worksheets. Others come alive through movement, discussion, hands-on projects, or creative exploration. Some parents love detailed lesson plans, while others prefer flexibility and open-ended learning.
Curriculum guides can be helpful tools, but don’t be afraid of trial and error. Sometimes the best way to discover what works is simply to begin. Every season teaches you something valuable about your children and your homeschool.

Remember: You Don’t Need Everything
One of the biggest misconceptions in homeschooling is that every new school year requires an entirely new curriculum lineup. It doesn’t.
Use what already works. Borrow books. Buy used curriculum. Swap resources with friends. Simplify wherever possible. Homeschooling does not have to be expensive to be effective.
Some of the richest learning experiences happen through read-alouds on the couch, meaningful conversations around the dinner table, nature walks, service opportunities, and simply doing life together.
A Guide, Not a Roadmap
Homeschooling is one of the greatest privileges we have as parents—but it can also feel overwhelming at times. With countless curriculum choices available, it’s easy to wonder if you’re making the “right” decisions.
This guide is not intended to be a perfect roadmap or an exhaustive list of the best curriculum options. Instead, think of it as encouragement from fellow homeschool parents who have walked this road before you.
Whether you are just beginning your homeschool journey or refining your plans after many years, we hope these recommendations help you approach the coming school year with greater confidence, clarity, and peace.
There’s No Such Thing as the “Perfect” Curriculum
If there’s one lesson homeschool families learn quickly, it’s this: no curriculum works perfectly for every child or every season.
A resource that works beautifully for one student may completely flop with another. Something that looked amazing in a catalog may need to be replaced by October.
That’s okay.
Homeschooling gives families the flexibility to adapt, adjust, and pivot when needed. Your curriculum choices should reflect your family’s values, your children’s needs, and your own teaching style—not someone else’s expectations.
Changing direction isn’t failure. Often, it’s wisdom.
High School: Plan Backwards, Live Flexibly
When homeschooling through high school, it can be helpful to “plan from twelfth grade backward.” Consider graduation requirements and long-term goals, then work backward year by year.
At the same time, hold those plans loosely.
Leave room for interest-led learning, hands-on experiences, mentorships, practical life skills, and opportunities your children may not discover through textbooks alone.
Morning Time and Life Skills Matter
In many of our homes, morning time has become one of the most valuable parts of the day.
Scripture reading, devotional time, character training, leadership studies, read-alouds, and meaningful parent-child conversations help establish a strong foundation before academics even begin.
We also believe life skills matter deeply. Homeschooling provides unique opportunities to teach responsibility, service, communication, stewardship, and leadership alongside traditional academics.
For Younger Kids: Keep It Simple
If you’re homeschooling younger children, don’t overcomplicate things.
Read aloud often. Spend time outside. Build strong habits. Cultivate curiosity. Focus on relationships and character.
A peaceful, connected learning environment will often accomplish far more than an overloaded schedule.
Homeschooling Is a Lifestyle
Homeschooling is about far more than checking academic boxes.
It’s a lifestyle centered on discipleship, relationships, and learning together as a family. Our homeschool days often include co-ops, volunteering, meaningful conversations, hospitality, field trips, music lessons, game nights, and everyday life experiences that shape character and faith.
Don’t measure success only by completed assignments.
Instead, ask questions like:
Are we growing in faith?
Are we strengthening our family relationships?
Are our children developing character and a love of learning?
Are we teaching them to love God and love others well?
Those are the things that matter most.
A Final Word of Encouragement
If you’re feeling unsure, discouraged, or overwhelmed, you are not alone. Every homeschool parent wrestles with doubt from time to time.
Start with prayer. Seek wisdom. Stay flexible. Give yourself grace as you learn.
The work you are doing matters deeply. Homeschooling is not simply about academics—it’s about discipling hearts, building relationships, and preparing your children to walk faithfully with God.
Your faithfulness today will bear fruit for generations to come.
