Two Owasso High School Football Players Ousted as Police Probe Lewd Acts and Fondling Among Students

July 12, 2026 - KTUL

OWASSO, OK — In November 2025, Owasso Police Department initiated an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment and lewd acts involving students at Owasso High School's East Campus. The incident, reported on November 14, 2025, allegedly occurred on school grounds during a weekend sports event and involved two suspects and two victims, all students. According to the police report, the offenses included "lewd or indecent proposals or acts to a child, and forcible fondling, which is a felony." Owasso Public Schools (OPS) confirmed they were notified the same day and began an internal review, stating, "The safety and well-being of our students and staff are always our highest priority, and OPS is fully cooperating with the Owasso Police Department to ensure this matter is investigated thoroughly." Due to privacy laws and the ongoing nature of the probe, limited details were released, but the school emphasized that confirmed wrongdoing would result in disciplinary action.

By January 2026, the investigation had led to tangible consequences for those involved. Two Owasso football players implicated in the alleged sexual crime were removed from the team's roster, as confirmed by OPS in a statement noting they became aware on November 14 of "an alleged incident involving members of the football program." The district reiterated its commitment to student safety and full cooperation with police, but no arrests, formal charges, or additional disciplinary outcomes have been publicly disclosed as of late January 2026. The case has drawn attention amid broader scrutiny of the district, including a prior 2024 lawsuit related to bullying and the suicide of a nonbinary student, Nex Benedict, though no direct connection to this incident was reported.

This event highlights ongoing concerns about student safety and accountability in public schools, particularly within athletic programs. While the investigation remains active, the removal of the players underscores the school's response to serious allegations, though critics have pointed to patterns of harassment in the district. No further updates on resolutions or victim support were available in the most recent sources.

Nex Benedict, a 16-year-old student at Owasso High School in Owasso, Oklahoma, died on February 8, 2024, one day after a physical altercation in a school bathroom. On February 7, 2024, Nex, a nonbinary student who used they/them pronouns, was involved in a fight with three other female students, during which Nex was reportedly beaten. Nex was taken to the hospital but discharged later that day. The family reported ongoing bullying and harassment related to Nex's gender identity prior to the incident, with claims that the school failed to adequately address complaints.

The Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled Nex's death a suicide caused by acute combined drug toxicity (overdose involving diphenhydramine, commonly known as Benadryl, and fluoxetine, known as Prozac). The full autopsy report, released in March 2024, noted handwritten notes suggestive of self-harm found at the scene. No criminal charges were filed; Tulsa County prosecutors declined to pursue any in March 2024, and the Owasso Police Department investigation concluded without trauma directly causing the death.

The case sparked significant scrutiny of Owasso Public Schools. In November 2024, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights found the district violated federal law by showing indifference to sex-based harassment claims and responding inconsistently to reports. Nex's family filed a wrongful death and negligence lawsuit against the district in June 2025, alleging failure to prevent bullying that contributed to the suicide. In September 2025, Owasso Public Schools denied wrongdoing and sought partial dismissal of the suit. As of early 2026, the lawsuit remains ongoing with no major reported resolutions.
